Hello from
Dr Kiran Shetra
Hello, I’m Dr. Kiran Shetra, an HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist and founder of OpenRoots Psychology.
With over 12 years’ experience working across the NHS and third-sector organisations. I’ve had the privilege of supporting people of all ages from many different backgrounds as they have navigated a range of psychological and mental health needs. My approach is grounded in compassion, curiosity, and honesty. I don’t use jargon or hide behind clinical language. I believe therapy works best when it feels real, human, and collaborative.
I draw on evidence-based approaches and work integratively and creatively in allowing space for holistic, spirituality, culture, and personal meaning in the healing process. I’m particularly interested in how our social and cultural worlds shape who we are and how we relate to others. My style is warm, direct, and down-to-earth. I value honesty, humour, and connection in the therapy room.
At OpenRoots Psychology, my aim is to help you reconnect with your story and your strengths, understand how your experiences have shaped you, and find new ways to grow and thrive. Whether you’re working through trauma or simply wanting to understand yourself more deeply, I offer a space where you can feel safe, seen, and supported, just as you are.

How I can help
People who come to work with me often arrive carrying a mix of experiences, emotions, and challenges, many of which can feel heavy to hold alone. Throughout my work, I’ve supported individuals navigating a wide range of difficulties, including:
Stress and burnout - Anger or difficulty managing emotions - Anxiety
Depression and low mood - Grief and loss - Childhood trauma
Trauma (recent or longstanding) - Confidence and self-esteem challenges - Feelings of guilt or shame
Family or relationship conflicts - Cultural and intergenerational tensions - Overthinking and rumination
Imposter feelings or perfectionism - Experiences of criticism (past or present)
You may recognise one or several of these in your own life, or perhaps you’re not sure what you’re feeling yet.
Whatever brings you here, we’ll explore it together with care, curiosity, and compassion. My role is to meet you where you are, help you make sense of what you’re experiencing, and support you in moving toward greater clarity, resilience, and emotional well-being.
Types of Therapy
There are many different therapeutic approaches, and part of my role as an integrative practitioner is to work collaboratively with you—both during the assessment process and throughout therapy to find the approach that best supports your needs. Working integratively means drawing on techniques from different therapeutic models to create a tailored, person-centred experience rather than a “one-size-fits-all” method.
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
A structured, evidence-based therapy that uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain reprocess traumatic or distressing memories, reducing their emotional intensity and promoting long-term healing.
Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET)
Designed especially for individuals who have experienced multiple or complex traumas, NET helps you create a coherent, empowering life narrative by integrating traumatic events into a meaningful timeline.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
A practical, goal-focused approach that helps you recognise and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours, supporting you to develop healthier coping strategies day-to-day.
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT)
A specialised form of CBT that gently supports the processing of traumatic experiences, helping you build emotional regulation skills and reduce trauma-related distress.
Narrative Therapy
A collaborative approach that helps you separate yourself from your problems and re-author your life story. It focuses on strengths, values, and the ability to create new, more empowering narratives.
The Tree of Life Approach
A creative, culturally sensitive method that uses the metaphor of a tree to explore strengths, roots, hopes, and connections—helping you express your identity in ways that feel safe, grounding, and empowering.
Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)
An approach that supports you in developing self-compassion, reducing shame, and soothing self-criticism. CFT helps strengthen emotional resilience by activating the brain’s soothing system.
Start your healing journey
Taking the first step into therapy can feel daunting, especially if it’s completely new to you. You might be unsure where to begin or what to expect, and that’s completely okay. There’s no right or wrong way to start, and you certainly don’t need to sit on a leather sofa, share your entire life story, or be in tears for therapy to be meaningful.
At OpenRoots, asking for help doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. I’m here to walk beside you, offering guidance, support, and a space where you can explore at your own pace.
Together, we move step by step collaboratively, gently, and with care to help you feel safe, seen, and understood.
If you feel ready to take the first step, you’re welcome to book a 15-minute complimentary call so we can connect and see whether this feels right for you.
If you need urgent help
Please be aware that OpenRoots Psychology is not an emergency service and does not provide urgent treatment. Please contact your GP or attend emergency services if you require urgent help or are at risk, where you will get right support you need.
